  • In early Greek mythology, Amphitrite was a sea-goddess and wife of Poseidon. Under the sway of the Olympian pantheon, poets became only the consort of Poseidon, and further reduced her to a symbolic representation of the sea. In Roman mythology, the consort of Neptune, figure that is relatively small, was the goddess of saltwater, Salacia.
