  • Item Details
  • This is a big marble sculpture by french sculptor Jean Raon (1630-1707). La Nuit (direct English translation; The Night) is depicted in the guise of Venus holding a blowtorch into the atmosphere, in a similar fashion to that of Zeus and a thunberbolt. This is a portion of a series of sculptures of the Grande Commande

The first undertaking was proposed in 1674 and strategies were drawn up as to what the chain of 24 sculptures could depict by Charles Le Brun. The thought was to be "designed as a comprehensive review of the effects of God on the world and an unity of mankind and nature" with personifications of various natural phenomenons and landmarks. The 24 sculptures were separated into individual string of four sculptures, depicting:
The Four Times of the Day - Morning, Noon, Evening, Night
Four Continents of the World - Europe, Asia, Africa, America
The Four Seasons - Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
The Four Elements - Earth, Air, Fire, Water
The Four Human Natures - The Choleric, The Phlegmatic, The Sanguine, The Melancholic
The Four Poems - The Heroic Poem, The Lyric, The Satirical, The Pastoral
